Media Sanitization and Disposal

Purpose

This policy establishes the requirement for the secure and appropriate disposal of Information Technology (IT) equipment, devices, network components, operating systems, application software, and storage media belonging to the College to prevent unauthorized use or misuse of College information. All IT equipment shall be properly sanitized prior to disposal or release, and sanitization procedures shall be properly documented to prevent unauthorized release of sensitive and/or confidential information that may be stored on that equipment and other electronic media.

Policy Detail

It is the policy of Barton Community College that NIST Special Publication 800-88 [1] shall be the controlling guidance for the sanitization and disposal of all media whether printed or electronic, removable or fixed.
